How to choose a Scopus-indexed journal (and dodge predatory ones)
May 14, 2026 7 min read
Submitting to the wrong journal wastes months. A smart shortlist saves time and protects you from predatory publishers.
Shortlist by scope and metrics
- Match your topic to the journal's aims and recently published articles
- Check indexing in Scopus, Web of Science or your field's standard
- Look at quartile (Q1–Q4), CiteScore and typical time-to-decision
Red flags of predatory journals
- Aggressive email invitations and guaranteed acceptance
- Fees hidden until after acceptance, or no clear peer review
- Fake or unverifiable editorial board and impact metrics
When in doubt, verify the journal against the official Scopus source list. A publication mentor can vet your shortlist and tailor your manuscript to the target before you submit.
